Question #7:

Should China begin using actual country names so their people will not be so ignorant of geography?

China uses a Mandarin name for countries such as: Faguo, Meiguo, Deguo,etc. for France, U.S., Germany, and this results in Chinese students having virtually no knowledge of the outside world, especially with respect to geography.

When I taught university students, they were eager to learn geography but would say that although they hear real country names on the news they had no idea what they meant. When I distributed world maps, many students could not locate the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

Couple this with China's historical preference to consider itself the center of the word (Zhonguo) and you have a recipe for intellectual disaster.

Does the government even want its citizens to know about life outside of China?
Edit: There is a ray of hope. In the past two or three years, I have seen some universities use the Harvard Model United Nations program and these students did a brilliant job of learning geography and politics. Still, few nations will likely be willing to adopt Chinese names for themselves just for the convenience of China, so perhaps China should begin calling them by internationally accepted names.
Edit: Anderson Cooper, thank you for prooving my point by referring to China as its internationally accepted name of "China" instead of calling it by its Chinese name, "Zhonguo".
Opps, make that "proving".

Question #8:

Incredibly weird geography assignment - HELP! :S?

Okay so, my new geography professor decided to give us some warm up homework :\

He said that [for a joke I suppose] he wanted us to prove to him that New Zealand exists. Yes, I was shocked too and yes, I know - it was an incredibly weird assignment.

I even thought to say to him that he must be a really rubbish geog. teacher if he doesnt 'believe in New Zealand'.

Anyway, I know nothing about New Zealand and I was wondering if anyone could help me try and prove that New Zealand exists.

I might actually bring a map of the world and just get a giant arrow pointing to the country :P

But I could really use your help!

Alyssa :D
Wow thank you ALL for the awesome advice and help :) I wish I could pick you all! But thank you once again, and I hope my geography teacher will be proud! :P
CAN ANYONE THINK OF AN OPENING PARAGRAPH? IM STUCK :\

Question #9:

french gcse : yay or nay?

I'm in year 10. Just started and we're doing our GCSE. I've chosen Art, Business, R.e and health and social.

When I chose this options, my tutor was arguing against them, saying I'm more academic and i'm up for and could suceed in more academic lessons i.e a language or geography etc. At the time I didn't believe him. I thought that because i'm taking triple science ( separate sciences ), and what I wanted to do in the future was something mathy and sciencey, I didn't need to bother.

Yesterday was my frist health and social lesson. Double lesson. I hated it! It's just not me! I'm not being arrogant, I just think I could do better. I don't need it for the future. I thought that I should just carry on with it and so I missed the chance to change the options today. If I do want to change the options, I'll have to wait till october sometime.

Everyone's shocked when I tell them what i've chosen. They too, believe I should be doing a language and slowly, I'm thinking that too. I'm thinking french. Of course last year I had ups and downs in french but the teacher told me that if i was to carry on with it, I could achieve at least a C, the pass grade.

I want to change health and social to french now but if I change it in october, i'm worried I'd have missed a few key lessons and so i'd hav a time trying to catch up.

What do you think I should do?

Question #10:

THIS IS MY COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAY, IS IT READY TO BE SENT TO COLLEGES?

Throughout my school years, the awards and distinctions continued to accrue. I was singled out for my chart-making in fifth grade geography and awarded a special commendation for my Ode to Clio in the seventh grade “Muse Off” competition (losing the first prize, disgracefully, to a poem in which the word “pigtail” was spelled “pig tail”). Even so, and despite the clear evidence of my elevated abilities, I have repeatedly had to contend with the downward pull of my less motivated, focused, and frankly capable peers. It has been, to be perfectly honest, a great drain on my considerable energies to hold myself in check while the rest of the class offer various lame opinions on the failure of socialism or the causes of the Civil War. My private tutors have gone so far as to say that school has held me back, and even compromised my otherwise limitless potential. If it had not been for ninth grade geometry, for example, I might have already completed multi-variable calculus. Instead, poor teaching has done irreparable harm to what might otherwise have been one of the great mathematical minds of my generation. If it had not been for the closed-minded sycophancy of the drama director, the voice which my vocal coach has described as “simply thrilling” would have received an appropriate showcase, rather than being relegated to the chorus. And had my eleventh grade English teacher not suffered from a delusional sense of her own abilities, I would have been given my head to fully explore the cannon as a self-directed, independent study, rather than being forced to goose step alongside the granite-brained “students” in my class, every one of them headed down the road to general ignorance and illiteracy. Is it any wonder, given these handicaps, that my SAT scores of 190 Reading, 310 Math, 270 Writing, and GPA of 0.4732 obviously do not reflect my true abilities, not to speak of my extraordinary promise?

Luckily, I have always known that it was my destiny to attend a first rate college or university. Only there will I finally meet and have the opportunity to exchange ideas with similarly brilliant and capable young people. How I yearn to meet my true fellow travelers, young men and women who share my vast hunger for knowledge, and ability to generate it! Only when we have shed the burden of those dead weights known, bizarrely, as our high school “peers” and “classmates”, will we emerge into the white light of real, searching knowledge. I am counting the days until the day of my enrollment, and I know that you are just as excited to meet me.

P.S: I am the current valedictorian, if that helps.

Question #18:

Is business studies a bad GCSE choice?? URGENT!!!10 points best answer!!?

I'm doing RS, French and Latin and can't do history because it clashed with my other subjects. I'm not sure whether I should do Geography, Ancient History or Business studies instead. I'm not that good at maths and am not sure if that would make me bad at business studies. I have friends in the business studies class and not in ancient history or geography though... That's another reason i want to do it; but my mum thinks business studies is for stupid people and an easy GCSE. What do you do in business studies and is it a bad choice??? Will choosing business studies make a difference on my chances at getting into university, if i choose it instead or ancient history or geography. Also what is involved in geography GCSE? Thank you so much for your help!! xx

Question #19:

Out of all the AP classes out there, which are the most useful and impressive ones to take?

I mean in terms of being useful after high school and impressive on your high school transcript.

* Art History
* Biology
* Calculus (AB & BC)
* Chemistry
* Chinese Language and Culture
* Comparative Government & Politics
* Computer Science A
* English Language & Composition
* English Literature & Composition
* Environmental Science
* European History
* French Language
* German Language
* Human Geography
* Japanese Language and Culture
* Latin: Vergil
* Macroeconomics
* Microeconomics
* Music Theory
* Physics B
* Physics C: Mechanics
* Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism
* Psychology
* Russian Language and Culture
* Spanish Language
* Spanish Literature
* Statistics
* Studio Art (2-D, 3-D, & Drawing)
* U.S. History
* U.S. Government & Politics
* World History

**required
As a senior I would have already taken:
* U.S. History**
* U.S. Government & Politics
* Calculus AB
* Biology
* European History**

That year I'm also planning to take:

* English Literature & Composition**
* Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism
* Calculus BC
* Chemistry
* Chinese Language and Culture
* ------------------

I've built up to take most of those AP's in senior year (ex. honors chem, Chinese 1-6, etc) except for Physics C, but I have taken Calc for that.

What's another good, useful AP class to take? I was thinking micro/macro econ (taken a semester course of econ) but if there are any other suggestions, including switching some classes around, that'd be great. By the way, is it good to take a lot of social science courses cuz as you can see, I've taken a lot, especially if I end up taking micro/macro econ.
Anyways, thanks for the help!
